A Night of Hope for the Homeless
"A Night of Hope for the Homeless" is an annual fundraiser for the Bishop Dudley Hospitality House. The main goal is to educate the public on the homeless situation in Sioux Falls and raise a majority of the operational dollars needed for the year. Twelve leaders of the community come together to 'sleep out' for a night in tents and cardboard boxes to experience just a few of the hardships of being homeless. Businesses and leaders around the community act as sponsors for the event and help raise a substantial part of BDHH's annual operating needs.
The event starts at 7:00 p.m. on October 25. 2018 with check in for all the participants where they fill out intake paperwork and have their belongings looked through. From there, a light dinner is served and a short program commences, including a video on homelessness in Sioux Falls, stories from staff and guests, and a discussion. At 9:00 pm, the participants head outside and prepare for the night ahead.
While the participants can bring items to keep them warm and comfortable, the conditions are still less than ideal. With cold hands but warm hearts, participants spend the evening waiting for their 5:00 a.m. wake up call. In the morning, the participants will get a debriefing on the events that transpired during the night and have a conversation about how the experience changed their perspective on being homeless.
The need is continuing and we are entering the cold weather season when shelter is so important. The community leaders choose to sleep out in the hopes that in the long term others, who have no choice, will not have to sleep in the freezing cold.
So far for 2018, our participants include Pat Starr, Theresa Stehly, Miles Beacom, Luke and Bobbie Tibbetts, and Stephanie Herseth Sandlin. More to come...!
