A Night of Hope for the Homeless
"A Night of Hope for the Homeless" is an annual fundraiser for the Bishop Dudley Hospitality House. The main goal is to educate the public on the homeless situation in Sioux Falls. Twelve leaders of the business, city, and community come together to 'sleep out' for a night in tents and cardboard boxes to experience just a few of the hardships of being homeless. Businesses and leaders around the community act as sponsors for the event and help raise a substantial part of BDHH's annual operating needs.
The event starts at 6:00 p.m. on October 19. 2017 with check in for all the participants. At 6:30 p.m. they are given a light meal at the Bishop Dudley Hospitality House and by 7:15 p.m. are ready for a short program. This program consists of an informational video on homelessness in the Sioux Falls area, hearing from a former resident of BDHH, and the reading of accounts of several other guests of the facility.
While the participants can bring items to keep them warm and comfortable, the conditions are still less than ideal. With cold hands but warm hearts, participants spend the evening waiting for their 5:00 a.m. wake up call. In the morning, the participants will get a debriefing on the events that transpired during the night and have a conversation about how the experience changed their perspective on being homeless.
The need is continuing and we are entering the cold weather season when shelter is so important. The community leaders choose to sleep out in the hopes that in the long term others, who have no choice, will not have to sleep in the freezing cold.
So far for 2017, participants include: Councilman Greg Neitzert, Father Cowles, Cory Myers, Bob Sutton, Tom Stritecky, Paul Ten Haken, Jaine Andrews, Dean Karsky, Jennifer Kirby and Steve Hildebrand.
